When you hear someone say that they are vegetarians, we consider them as people who do not eat fish, meat, and poultry. But then did you know that there are actually 8 different types of vegetarians based on the kind of food they include and exclude ?.  Interesting Right

Flexitarians

Flexitarians or Semi Vegetarians Person following a flexitarian diet depends mainly on plant-based,  but then incorporates occasionally meat and other animal products. The Flexitarian Diet was created by dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner to help people reap the benefits of vegetarian eating while still enjoying animal products in moderation. This diet suits all those people who are die-hard nonvegetarian fans, but would like to move to a healthier option.

Pescatarians

The person following Pescatarians diet depends mainly on plant-based,  but then include seafood as a source of protein. Some even include dairy and eggs. Pescatarians can be also called ‘Fish Lovers’. The term pescatarian comes from the Italian word for fish, “pesce,” and the word “vegetarian.”

Lacto-ovo Vegetarians

The person following Lacto-ovo vegetarian diet avoid meat, fish, and poultry, but still eat animal products like dairy and eggs. The word “lacto” indicates dairy products and “ovo” refers to eggs which when added to vegetarian, became Lacto-ovo Vegetarians. Many people who adopt this diet do this to reduce their intake of animal products for ethical, environmental, or health reasons.

Lacto Vegetarians

The person following Lacto Vegetarian diet doesn’t eat fish, meat or egg but does consume dairy products. Some studies suggest that people who follow a lacto-vegetarian diet have a lesser chance of getting cardiovascular diseases.

Ovo Vegetarians

Ovo vegetarians don’t eat meat, seafood, or dairy products, but then they do eat eggs and products that contain eggs like cake, bakes, and cookies. This is not a very popular form of diet. People mostly choose this diet pattern due to health, environmental, religious, or ethical reasons.

Pollo Vegetarians

The word “pollo” means chicken in Spanish. Pollo vegetarians include in their diet poultry, like chicken turkey and/or duck in addition to plant-based food. This diet is very much similar to a flexitarian diet. 

Vegan

Vegan is probably the most popular one of all. People following vegan diet don’t eat any animal products, including meat, fish, poultry, dairy, and eggs. Vegans do not use even honey or beeswax, gelatin or any other animal by-product ingredients or products. People following a vegan diet should ensure that they get enough protein, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D.

Macrobiotic vegetarian

People following the Macrobiotic diet eat mostly unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains (particularly brown rice), some fruits and plenty of vegetables, and occasionally fish. The one who strictly follows this diet avoid even sugar and refined oils. The most distinct feature of the macrobiotic diet is its emphasis on the consumption of Asian vegetables like Daikon, seaweed, as well as fermented foods such as Japanese miso and natto (fermented soybeans), pickles and fermented sauerkraut.
