If you want to be certain your next child will be the gender you are hoping for then no other method comes close to PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis)

With the use of PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis), also known as embryo screening, gender selection is possible with 100% accuracy

Assisted reproductive technology(ART) known to common man as IVF, ICSI, Fertility treatment can not only help a child less parent get a child, but can help them have a child of desired sex.

Why is it done

  1. This is done to prevent the inheritance of genetic diseases like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Cystic fibrosis, Beta thalassemia
  2. It reduce the possibility of transmitting sex-linked genetic diseases like muscular dystrophy, hemophilia to an offspring for at risk couples.
  3. Having a male or female child to balance their family

A “balanced family” is one with equal numbers of male and female children. Selecting the sex of the child with help of ART help families to balance it out before becoming pregnant. This treatment option allows families to ‘balance’ the number of girls or boys they have. In Indian scenario it boils down to having a boy child.

How is it done

PGD or preimplantation genetic screening is done in the context of IVF. Sex selection is performed through the laboratory technique of PGS. Through the laboratory process of PGS, individual embryos that are created in an IVF cycle can be screened to determine if they are genetically male or female. Then, only embryos of the desired sex are transferred back into the uterus. Any remaining euploid (chromosomally normal) embryos that are not transferred can be stored for future use.

Which clinics offer this service

Though carrying out Prenatal gender determination is prohibited in India, the law is relaxed when it comes to assisted reproductive treatment. Prenatal Gender Determination and Sex Selection is allowed to diagnose any birth defects or medical abnormalities in the fetus. The gender selection clinics in India provide assistance to couples with known genetic disorders, and those who have strong desire to have a child of specific gender. The cost involved in carrying out this procedure in India is very affordable and the clinics offer world class facilities to the patients from around the globe.

Gender Selection for the purpose of Family Balancing is completely legal in only three countries; Thailand, South Africa and the US. America is by far very expensive. Thailand has become the go-to destination for couples not willing to leave the gender of their baby to chance. Patients travel to Thailand from China, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, India and also from many countries in Europe.

I like that you have highlighted that one can choose gender of the baby only in cases of IVF where their is possibility of genetic disorders. My MIL is a gynecologist and she has told me so many stories where even though there isn’t any history of genetic conditions so couples insist on a specific gender – she sends them away and doesn’t take their case. But the people in our country really need to be educated on this topic.

India is a Patriarchal society. Preference for Boy child is more. Probably this way it might help some women from hearing the complaint of not bearing boy child

This is a great way to balance family but due to gender inequality in India, we can’t expect this thing to be legalised any sooner
